A no-compromise lightweight notebook

Really good

Yet another all-in-one portable iPod speaker come charger, but this one is different – it’s really rather good for a start.

Great Sound from a small footprint

Everyone that hears this speker system cannot believe it comes from such a small size. I would recommend the remote which I do not have.

A compelling little package

If design is important to you - and for many iPod owners, it is - On Stage Micro presents a compelling little package with typically JBL-quality good looks and efficiency. But if you’re willing to compromise on beauty, portable systems such as Logic3’s i-Station7 (iLounge rating: A) offer a roughly identical set of features - Universal Dock, remote, and low-end audio, here enhanced by a dedicated bass driver and standard Dock Connector port on the back - for the same price. Similarly, if you’re willing to give up the dock and remote, you’ll find that JBL’s On Tour offers superior sound, and can be found for even lower street prices.

Good choice for small spaces

The JBL On Stage Micro is a circular mini-speaker (6 inches in diameter, 1.8 inches high) with an iPod dock in the middle. This ultra-portable unit comes with its own carrying bag, which holds the included AC adapter and wireless remote. The sound was very clear with good power for the size, though the speaker lacked bass. The On Stage Micro is a good choice for small spaces like offices and hotel rooms.

Portable Ipod Unit is definitely as advertised.

Am quite happy with this unit. Works well - haven't used long enough to check battery life but sound quality is quite good.

Unlikely to disappoint anyone for the price

Overall, the i552 walks on the fine edge of A- and B+ grades, but on balance, we consider it to be highly recommendable overall - a speaker that sounds good, properly delivers on its promised radio functionality, and includes iPod dock and remote features that have previously only been found in higher-priced offerings. And best of all, since iLuv appears set to officially drop i552’s suggested price to $100 upon release of the video-ported version 2 - a price you can already find at stores online - you don’t need to compromise on dollars to do better than its competitors. As iPod boomboxes go, it’s pretty great, and unlikely to disappoint anyone for the price.

Doesn't sound good but appealing for its value

The iLuv i552 doesn't sound as good as some other portable speaker systems for the iPod, but is appealing for its value—you get more features (AM/FM radio, remote, compatibility with dockable and shuffle iPods) for the money ($120) than in any other boombox-style system we’ve tested. However, its design—a less-than-secure iPod dock cradle, no place to store the remote, and an external AC power adapter—makes it more suited for stationary use with occasional transporting.

Looking for small sound then this is the one for you

The iLuv i552 iPod boombox has a carrying handle joining the two speakers and measures 14.2 x 7.5 x 6.1 inches. A universal iPod dock sits in the center, as do playback controls and a small monochrome LCD. Power, AV out, and line-in ports are on the back, and it comes with a wireless remote and A/V cable. If you're looking for a small sound, this is your speaker dock.
