If underwater YouTubing were a market segment, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1 would be the camera to get. But the awkward design and slow performance make it hard to recommend for landlubbers.

The MacBook is ideal in so many ways. It is light, slim, fast and capable of so much computing power that I find myself NOT wondering when I should trade up. The physical design is impressive and ergonomically wonderful. The screen is beautiful and delivers sharp, vibrant and life-like images. The keyboard is a pleasure to use. The internal architecture, except for GPU, is nearly identical to the MacBook Pro, which means that it is as fast a computer as the much more expensive Pro variant.

The bottom line is that this looks like a good OS X laptop without some of the flaws of the first MacBook. Since any OS X laptop is an improvement over an XP laptop it's an excellent choice for everyone. If you intend to run Windows software I think Apple's Boot Camp (separate download) may be more reliable and elegant than Parallels.

As the replacement for Apple's consumer-level iBook line, the new 13-inch MacBook isn't being marketed toward creative professionals. Nevertheless, packed with one of the most powerful mobile processors on the market--a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo--this little notebook offers amazing rendering and encoding performance. But is it good enough to compete with the MacBook Pros and with desktop G5 systems? Surprisingly, yes, it is.

The 13-inch MacBook from Apple is a budget-priced laptop that offers screaming-fast performance and features that you won't find on any laptop from any manufacturer for anywhere near the price. If you don't need the high-end graphics of the MacBook Pro, the 13-inch MacBook will be your dream notebook.

The new MacBook, updated to Intel's Core 2 Duo CPU, compares very favorably with Apple's high-end MacBook Pro line, offering premium performance at a reasonable price.

Even with more processor speed, hard drive capacity, and RAM size, the base-model MacBook is still one of the most affordable and best-looking laptops in the market.

ThinkPad R61 is a nicely designed machine that deserves consideration as a travel-worthy portable.

Lenovo's latest widescreen business notebook offers plenty of processing and graphics muscle in a durable, lightweight design.

The fully featured ThinkPad R61 would have its business thin-and-light competition beat, if it wasn't for its disappointing battery life.
