On the whole, the Xacti E1 just jumped to the top of my wish list, even above the iPhone.

This is not your average camcorder. We recently purchased a new Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens (Black) to replace our old point and shoot and realized that we missed the "Video" features of the point and shoot. We have owned an older Canon camcorder but really hate lugging around tapes and getting the video to the computer is not fun. So we purchased the Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1 and have been very impressed. I have never seen such a small lightweight waterproof camera anywhere. If you are looking for a great easy to use camcorder and you aren't worried as much about video quality, the Xacti VPC-E1 is the way to go.

If underwater YouTubing were a market segment, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1 would be the camera to get. But the awkward design and slow performance make it hard to recommend for landlubbers.

The SANYO Xacti HD1 is the world's first high-definition compact digital media camera offering advanced, next-generation video performance. The palm-sized HD1 records both 720p high-definition video and 5.1-megapixel digital still images to a standard Secure Digital flash memory card. This compact media camera features a brilliant 2.2-inch OLED color display and a powerful 10x optical zoom lens with image stabilization. Like all the Xacti media cameras the HD1 can record high definition video and simultaneously capture still images with a simple press of the shutter button.

The good: Records 720p high-definition video; small, lightweight, and attractive; 10X optical zoom; rotating OLED screen. The bottom line: If you want the latest in cool toys, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1 certainly has the right gadget quotient. Once you look at the image quality, however, its allure dims quite a bit.

Offering advanced, next-generation video performance, the Sanyo HD1 is the world’s smallest and lightest high-definition digital media camera, ideal for recording today with the future in mind. Sanyo, the world’s leading manufacturer of digital cameras and components, designed the Sanyo Xacti VPC HD1 to easily record both 720p high-definition video and 5.1 Megapixel digital still images to a standard SD flash memory card.

In form as well as function the Xacti is a mixture of still and video camera. It is designed to be held one-handed like a pistol, with a large 2.2in flip-and-twist monitor screen on the side and all the controls mounted for thumb operation on the back. It has a powerful 10x optical zoom lens, and a small pop-up flash on the top. It is powered by a large 1200mAh Lithium-ion battery that is mounted inside the handgrip under a removable panel, rather like a mobile phone.

When it's all said and done, the Xacti VPC-HD1 is a great little video camera. It has the ability to take HD quality movies given the right conditions. The tapeless design is pretty convenient. Yes, SD cards are more expensive than digital video tapes, but SD cards are also more compact, can't get jammed and they let the camera power on super fast. Also, with SD cards, each time you record something, it will be saved as a new file on the card. I find that this makes it easier for me to do my editing instead of slicing and dicing longer clips to make shorter ones.

Its small size is a plus, but the Xacti HD1's video quality needs a lot of improvement in order to keep up with the competition.

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1 seems to fulfill the fantasies of many a tech-head: high definition (HD) video at an affordable price. And it does meet the technical requirements of HD, recording at 1280 x 720 at 30 frames per second (fps), also known as 720p.
