This TV is great. The picture quality is great, even if you don't use HD. Having and HDMI input lets you get the best possible picture out of your HD devices. It has great features as well. Night and Day mode that adjusts the picture for the best viewing settings for the time of day. The whole unit is on wheels which is an amazing feature. It's effortless to move it for cleaning and attaching new devices. It has composite, component and s-video inputs. As well as optical audio out, and rca audio out. You can use the TV speakers as your center speaker if your surround sound receiver supports it. Overall this TV is amazing, the features are great, the price is great and the picture quality is incredible.

The good: Reproduces deep color of black; relatively accurate initial color temperature; built-in backlighting can help reduce eyestrain; sleek design with glass-base stand. The bottom line: While we had some complaints about its picture quality, the Philips 42PF9631D's built-in backlight and sweet style will appeal to people who want something different.

With its wide black bezel, silvery speakers, and semitransparent stand, the Philips 42PF9631D 42-inch plasma HDTV is a graceful and imposing presence. If you walk around the unit, you'll find more to admire: well-chosen, easy-to-reach inputs and outputs; a lighted remote; and the unusual Ambilight backlighting panels. The most important part of any television, though, is the picture it presents on its screen, and the 42PF9631D more than holds its own on that score.

With a stack load of Philips' technologies the TV includes Pixel Plus 2 HD to drastically boosting sharpness and detail clarity, as well as, an MPEG artefact meter, which measures the quality of the incoming signal and varies the level of processing accordingly - and ensuring that SD feeds are not ‘over’ processed. The TV also includes Philips' light technology, Ambilight 2, which features lights behind either side of the screen that replicate and match on-screen content to reduce the possible strain on your eyes from watching television.

The 42PF9631D's array of inputs is one of the better ones I've seen on a 42-inch plasma lately. All inputs are well identified and easily reached. The left side offers inputs for USB, headphone jack, composite, and S-Video, and audio inputs useful for connecting a camcorder or digital camera. (I'd have liked to see a CableCard slot as well, since a TV this attractive shouldn't have to compete with a less-than-lovely tuner box.) On the back you'll find the expected assortment of inputs, plus digital audio in and out--a boon for anyone who prefers their own audio setup to the TV's speakers. Though the 42PF9631D includes several sound settings and virtual Dolby digital sound, I found the sound from the attached speakers merely adequate.
