    • Works well enough

The MicroTrack is fairly easy to operate, and records with good sound quality. I wish it had a strap or cover or something, as the surface is a hard, smooth plastic which is easy to drop. The ergonomics are a little off, as I can't reach the main function control button and the record button with the same hand without fumbling, but I have smaller-sized hands. It does take a long time to boot up, and the manual is fairly unhelpful. Nevertheless, it does what it's supposed to do--record sound--with reasonably high quality, in a portable format.

    • Portable and powerful

Battery usage is quite good. I had to listen to my player at bedtime, and I ended up having it on from 12 midnight until 6:30 AM. I had to use it for class the following day. I recorded my lesson for an hour and it worked flawlessly, without having to recharge right away. If you are a musician or music professional, this is your recorder. Can be taken anywhere!

    • Digital Recorder

I am enjoying the quality of sound it produces. It is far superior to a tape recorder. I had an issue where it indicated that my media is full. I thought I couldn't record and it was a brand new cartridge. I have since found that it says that once I format the cartridge and I must ignore it and press the record button again. The software "Audacity" that is provided with it is difficult to use. It may be partially my lack of knowledge of the recording industry terms and processes. I have downloaded music I recorded and have intermittently been successful with editing and then saving the wav file to a cd. The directions have not been complete enough for my level of expertise.

    • Transom Tools: M-Audio Microtrack 24/96

The recorder is amazingly flexible given its size. It features several input options, including external mic inputs with phantom power, and the biggest surprise, an S/PDIF digital input. Outputs are limited to the mini headphone jack and a stereo pair of RCA plugs, but the very nature of these devices reduces the need for elaborate output interfacing. The best news is that at its most basic, the machine is extremely easy to use, with all the major controls readily accessible from the top, with hardware buttons, not buried in menus or controlled by soft switches.

I use it for recording classical musical performance, nature sounds, foly type video sound effects/ samples, and business meetings. It excells in all areas. For recording music, nature and effects/samples I usually use two Neumann 184 condensor mics which the recorder provides phantom power to quite nicely with two TRS to XLR cables. For business meetings the provided 1/8" stereo mic does a great job. Long meetings require me to record to MP3, which does not cause a problem at all. the quality at 128 is very good for people talking.

The Microtrack has a lot of potential, I wish a better company had produced it. For portable recording and transfer to another device by removing the CF card and putting it in the other device it should be great! If that's what you are going to do with it then I have to say I recommend it. Maybe someday a future firmware update will make it a viable player as well but be prepared to wait a bit on that. Right now as a player you will have the same love hate relationship with it I do, love the sound quality and ability to play loud on your headphones without distorting like an i-Pod and hate the frustrating menu operation.
