It’s a $350 TV set replacement minus the TV tuner and larger screen most people would want given its price and size, and if its name has led you to expect inMotion-style portability, you’ll have to look elsewhere to find it. As rare as this is by past Altec standards, we’d call this one a definite “pass, and a bad idea that should have been nixed before release.

While it's hard to say where Altec Lansing's iMV712 mini home theater for the iPod fits into the home, it does up the ante for iPod speaker systems.

As a speaker dock, the Altec Lansing iMV712 would be a fine choice. It's sound is clean and accurate, and it can provide enough volume, without distortion, and a nice bass kick to fill a room with sound. As a mini-theater, the device is somewhat puzzling. Perhaps we can see planting the device on our office desk while we watch a movie, but if we wanted to sit through a movie we wouldn't watch it in our office. Still, to really see what's going on, you need to be close to the screen, but the screen doesn't stand up to close scrutiny.
