The box is compact and has a stand, so sits nicely on the desk. It has a quiet cooling fan which is normally running, but is not really audible next to a PC. When copying files the disk can be heard, but it is still quiet. I have not done a quantitative speed test but is seems quick enough - although a complete backup of a large disk will take a few hours. Mostly it is straightforward to setup, although adding security is a little fiddly. The manual on CD-ROM helps here, but the paper manual is very brief.

The Buffalo LinkStation Multimedia Home Server Edition is a Network Attached Storage (or NAS): it is connected to the local network, and acts as a stand-alone file server. It can be accessed only via Ethernet and although it is not as fast as USB/Firewire drives, the network connectivity is a great differentiator. The LinkStation can also be accessed via FTP (whether from inside or outside your network), which makes it a very interesting solution to share files over the internet. It is effectively an FTP server.

If you are looking for a true server for your media this is not it in its present state. You would be better off just buying the standard Link Station. They need to put a little more effort in the media server. A device like this when done right will be the wave of the future. A low watt device to run media and home automation is what I have been looking for.

Pros: Network storage for media and general files. Has potential in the server end if it could be accesed to allow a users media server to be installed.
