If you want an excellent Blue-Ray DVD player that also excels playing standard DVDs (as well as DVD-Audio) and money is not an issue, the Panasonic DMP-BD10 is an excellent choice. In addition to solid performance it also has a good remote control and looks as expensive as it is.

This is indeed a very fine Blu-ray player. The machine has the stability/reliability of a regular DVD player, and it also loads pretty quick compared to other hi def players. Excellent picture quality too.

From a performance perspective, there’s no denying that the DMP-BD10 is a sensational product and in terms of features it’s miles better than the Samsung BD-P1000. But there’s also no denying the fact that it’s wildly overpriced, costing nearly three times as much as the Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD deck and twice as much as the step-up HD-XE1.

The biggest reason to get excited about Blu-ray at the moment is its hi-def abilities. Whereas DVDs have a native resolution of 576p, Blu-ray's extra memory capacity means it can deliver movies at 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolution - that's up to four times the detail of a DVD. Upscaled DVD playback isn't quite so impressive, and there are cheapish DVD players out there that do a better job of this - but this isn't the point, the Panasonic is simply the best High Definition DVD player out there at the moment.

This expensive Blu-ray Disc player looks pretty on the surface, but it has a mediocre functional design and middling image quality. The player's built-in audio decoding is a step above that of some of the other Blu-ray players: The unit can decode Dolby Digital Plus 5.1-channel audio--the only Blu-ray player in our roundup to do so.

The Panasonic DMP-BD10 is a very competent first-generation Blu-ray player, but its high price and the comparably affordable PlayStation 3 make it hard to recommend.

Judged purely as a DVD/CD/Blu-ray player, the Panasonic is a superb product. It does an outstanding job playing back Blu-ray Discs, is a fine DVD player with good upconversion capabilities, and is a good CD player as well. It does have several weaknesses. Its analog outputs will not be optimum in some systems, and its DVD-Audio playback is problematic. If you are counting on these other features, I recommend caution, or at least a trial run. But if you want top quality, first-generation Blu-ray player, it's definitely worth a close look.

If one were to compare this Panasonic player to the offerings in the HD DVD arena from Toshiba, it would be very safe to say that the picture equals the Toshiba player's on material that is available on both formats. It will probably take dual layer Blu-Ray releases with potentially higher bitrates to really see if the Blu-Ray format is capable of producing a better image than HD DVD. Since the current crop of releases that are available on both formats make use of the same transfers, it is going to be impossible to distinguish between the two. I'll take a look at the Paramount releases this week and follow up on any advances in picture quality that there might be. Until then, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Panasonic DMP-BD10 to those who are willing and ready to make the jump into HD.

My wife got this unit for me for Christmas. (Is that a great wife?) We've used it on two cross country flights and we are extremely pleased with it. The only problem that we encountered was that when we plugged two sets of earphones (through a "y" splitter)into it we could not hear the audio over the noise on a flight. I solved that problem by purchasing an earphone booster (boosteroo) that increases the volume with a self powered amplifier/splitter. The unit has audio/video plugs that are switchable for in or out with makes it usable as either a monitor or an emergency DVD player for a large TV. We also purchased a larger battery (made by initial) that extends the usable hours to 4 or better.
