Garmin eTrex Legend Handheld GPS Receiver

With the eTrex Legend, GARMIN has loaded a full basemap of North and South America into one small unit. The Legend is also designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). I recently bought this product. I also bought the Map source Canada TOPO maps. The topo maps have great detail (ex.the roads.) Compared to other devices such as the Magellan explorist 210 the Legend shows more verstilty and ease of use. The legends base map had more detail then any other product I tried. I only wish it was a USB device and or had SD capabilities. But overall a great product.

Great Gadget

For the price, you can't beat this GPS. Sure there are better GPS's out there, but you will certainly pay a lot more for them. This is a great entry level GPS unit if you don't want to spend a lot of money. I bought mine mainly for using in a boat, but I take it with me whenever I travel. It has a built in base map of all interstates and major highways. No detailed city maps, but it will ge t you from one city to another and helps pass the time by keeping up with your travel statistics. For the price you pay, it is worth the money. Overall I have been extremely happy with my eTrex Legend unit. It is extremely well made and very robust, it has taken several knocks but none have harmed it. The unit looks and feels very attractive. It is easy to use and Im sure a beginner could start using it very quickly. The buttons are easy to use on the side of the unit which keeps the front nice and clutter free. The click stick on the front of the unit is the only button on the front and this too is easy to use. The screen is clear despite being black and white. I picked mine up for around £100 from ebay just over a year ago and think it has represented excellent value for money and have not been disappointed with it. The only bad thing about the unit is the lack of USB PC connection. Although this is a function im sure not many people use all that often. I would definately reccomend this unit to potential buyers, it is great for everyone, for a first GPS reciever or for someone looking for a few more functions on a GPS at excellent value for money.

Maybe I bought a defective unit granted i am a novice with a gps but i read all the directions and i could not the contrast to show better in the daylight. The ease of use wasn't all bad. I was rafting down the grand canyon and was amazed with all the info it provided.

This is my first GPS and when I buy my next one, I will make sure that I get one with a larger memory chip. When I am at home in San Antonio, I can only load the detailed maps for the north half of the city. If I go to the Gulf of Mexico, I have to be very selective as to which maps I load before filling up the memory and of course, the area that we spend most time in near Rockport is at the intersection of 4 of the detailed maps. All things considered, I feel that it is definitely worth the money I paid for it.

I think the performance of the unit is excellent and I couldn't ask for anything more in a GPS of this size (except for the memory card slot). I would highly recommend it.

In All, The Etrex Legend GPS is your best Buy in a handheld mapping GPS. If your'e looking for more features, check out the more expensive Etrex Vista and Garmin Gpsmap 76, or the very expensive handheld cartographic units, but if you just want a very good, inexpensive, handheld mapping GPS, The Legend is the best around.
