    • Canon PowerShot SD1000 / Digital IXUS 70 Digital Camera

Canon looked to the very first ELPH for inspiration when designing the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, and came up with a quintessential iteration of the icon: slim, clean-lined and fully flat. Inside, the SD1000 Digital ELPH looks only to the future: 7.1 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom and advanced DIGIC III ensure top-quality images, while focus is fast and sharp and red-eye is automatically corrected. The large and more colorful LCD screen now has a tough, anti-reflective coating that makes it as durable as it is beautiful.

I've only had the camera for a week now and barely read anything in the instruction manual, but I feel like I know how to use it. It's so easy. I love how it has a view finder to use when its sunny outside, but I havn't had a problem with not being able to see i mages on the LCD screen in sunlight yet. When I'm in a dimly lit room my pictures are still visable. I like that I don't have to keep buying batteries because it comes with one that is rechargable. And it only takes an hour and 30 minutes to fully charge. I also like how it uses SD cards because they are so cheap now and I have an SD slot in my PC. It focuses well on its automated setting. It's so easy its the best digital camera I've ever owned.

    • Very good photo quality, low noise

Despite a few flaws, the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH is a nice improvement over its predecessor, and a great choice for those looking for an ultra-compact camera. Its combination of style, photo quality, and performance make it one of the most compelling cameras in its class.

    • Fast, stylish with excellent photo quality

There really isn?t anything new here. Canon is the most modular of the major digicam manufacturers and their product development folks have a broad catalog of proven components (sensors, zoom lenses, LCD screens, processors, etc.) to draw from when creating new models. This impressive level of component interchangeability (modularity) allows Canon's product development folks to create new models easily and cheaply. The SD1000 is a very good example of just how well this modular design philosophy works.

    • I really like the way it looks

      saved by wordscount | trustedreviews.com

Personally I really like the way it looks, but to be fair the design does cause one or two minor problems. For one thing, trying to operate the controls in the dark is very difficult, because their flat shape makes them almost impossible to find by touch. Another troublesome design feature which has, I suspect, only been included for its cosmetic effect, is the optical viewfinder. A decent optical viewfinder is a real advantage, especially when bright sunlight makes your monitor screen difficult to use, but the viewfinder on the IXUS 70 is so small and fiddly that it?s pretty much useless.

    • Little camera with a number of attributes

      saved by wordscount | imaging-resource.com

The Canon PowerShot SD1000 is a fine little camera with a number of attributes that will please the snapshooter, and may even attract the more sophisticated photographer who wants a small take-anywhere digital camera. Video fans will appreciate the multiple movie modes, including time lapse and fast frame rate options. Regardless of experience level, most everyone will find image quality more than satisfying, although it's important to maintain control over ISO settings to keep image noise to a minimum. That some features are buried deep within the menu system probably won't bother snapshooters very much, since it's unlikely they'll use them on a regular basis. It will be frustrating to photographers who want to wring every last bit of control out of the camera. But if you're as big of an ELPH fan as I am, you won't let any of those minor drawbacks dissuade you from slipping a Canon SD1000 into your pocket or purse.

    • Picture quality is unacceptable

      saved by wordscount | amazon.com

I have been struggling to find a good camera recently. I have been unsuccessful finding one that works used (I tried ordering two, and both arrived broken), so I next tried a new camera. I thought that the Canon name would mean quality, so I tried the SD1000. The quality of the pictures, however, is unacceptable. Zoom in far on a picture you've taken an tell me what you see. I see pixelation (even before hitting the 100% zoom) and terrible noise problems. Yes, I'm very particular when it comes to my pictures, and yes, the typical user might not notice this. However, if you're a stickler for quality, then don't choose this camera. I'm not sure what the deal is but it seems to be a common problem with many of the new Canon cameras. You're probably thinking that I need to spend more money for a better camera if I want quality. All I can say is that I miss my Canon S400 and A530. Both had their issues (red eye in the S400, and battery issues in the A530) but the quality of these older cameras' pictures was far superior compared to the new SD1000. I guess I'll try a digital SLR next.
