Here we are once again. I ' ve bought another digital camera and once again my own expectations are being undershot. This time I spent a major chunk of change only to plan the return of yet another item to Fry ' s Electronics the day after purchase. Let...

The Panasonic LX2 inherits the f/2.8 28mm wide angle LEICA DC lens, 4x optical zoom (equivalent to 28mm to 112mm on a 35mm film camera) and MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) system in addition to an enhanced CCD capable of 10.2 Megapixels and larger 2.8 inch 16:9 wide LCD.

The good: Great lens; nice design; lots of manual controls. The bottom line: The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is a good choice for an enthusiast looking for a powerful camera that can fit into a jacket pocket.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is being billed by Panasonic as a successor to the popular DMC-LX1. It has a 16:9 widescreen sensor, 10.2 megapixel sensor, 4x Optical Zoom, and has a wider 2.8 inch LCD screen. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is said to have a lower noise than the LX1 and now features the possibility of pictures taken at up to ISo 3200 as well as an automatic 'intelligent ISO Control' which boosts ISO if motion is detected in the shot. The other features that elevate the DMC-LX2 is the incorporation of 13 MB of built-in memory while the battery life is extended up to 300 pictures* on one charging, not to let you miss those great spur-of-the-moment shots.

The new LX2 remains a native widescreen model, and features several enhancements including the obligatory increase in resolution from 8.4 to 10.2 Megapixels. To combat noise and allow recording up to 1600 ISO at full resolution, the LX2 employs Panasonic’s latest Venus Engine III image processor. The new Venus Engine also equips the LX2 with Panasonic’s Intelligent ISO Control which can automatically adjust the ISO and shutter speed based on any subject motion.

Like its predecessor, the Panasonic LX2 is clearly inspired by the surging popularity of widescreen (16:9) televisions. Employing a unique set of "triple-wide" features, the LX2 combines a 28mm wide-angle Leica lens. Aside from the superficial styling of the camera, the Panasonic DMC-LX2 is certainly no rangefinder. Since the huge LCD takes up most of the rear of the camera, there's no room for an optical viewfinder, a scenario that is becoming almost standard on digital cameras these days.

The exterior of the DMC-LX2 is metallic, thin, and feels both solid and luxurious. The camera is available in a silver finish (DMC-LX2S), or in black (DMC-LX2K). Just like the LX1, the LX2 is designed to capture an image with the same proportions as HDTV, the upcoming standard, instead of the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio that is common to older televisions and monitors.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 comes close to being the ideal compact digital camera that many advanced photographers have been waiting for. In its feature set, it is almost identical to the FZ50, and provides full photographic control. It has fast performance with 1 sec. startup and no practical shutter lag. It has a 16:9 [HDTV] aspect ratio image sensor and the 28mm wide-angle lens is perfect for landscape and group shots.

The Panasonic Lumix LX2 breaks the 4:3 rule and takes photos with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The 10-megapixel Panasonic LX2 is an update to the LX1, and adds more resolution and new features such as the world’s first Intelligent ISO control that measures both lighting and movement in an image, and adjusts the ISO appropriately.
