Pros: Superior quality. Lens, electronics, features.
Cons: High cost to many.
I ' ve had my L1 for a little over a month. My previous cameras included my " main " camera, being a Leica M2 (1963 to 1999), a couple of earlier Leica models, an original Leicaflex, a Kodak twin-lens reflex, a Canon F1 and Rebel " G " , an old Vivitar w/...

OIS stands for optical image stabilization and is featured in various Panasonic models. Panasonic put some serious thought into this and came out with a great implementation that REALLY WORKS. The L1 is a great digital SLR -- as long as you don't already own Canon or Nikon-compatible lenses. The kit 14-50 mm lens is actually a great value as it includes the more expensive wideangle range. The camera itself is well built and takes EXCELLENT pictures with little fuss. I love it. I'll add more details as I gain more experience with the camera -- but so far, so superb!

The good: Fast, image stabilized kit lens; built-in bounce flash; can preview shots on LCD. The bottom line: Panasonic's Lumix DMC-L1 is a nice first attempt at a dSLR, but a clunky design and noise at higher ISOs destroy its chances for dSLR superstardom.

The DMC-L1 is Panasonic's first digital SLR, its design ethos is clearly clean, simple, functional and very 'Leica like'. There are lots of touches in the design of this camera which make it more appealing that most other digital SLRs, these include the shutter speed dial and aperture ring (on the lens) which give very quick access to manual exposure creativity and encourage the photographer to experiment more.

The Panasonic L1 is operated much like a traditional film camera but provides a variety of innovative features that increase the fun of shooting photos. While the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 is digital, it has a classic design that will remind users of traditional analogue cameras. The Panasonic L1 further incorporates a Supersonic Wave Filter that serves as a dust reduction system, so you don't have to worry about dust entering the camera during lens changes.

The Lumix DMC-L1 marks Panasonic’s debut into the digital SLR market. Panasonic’s opted for a retro look and feel which will greatly appeal to lovers of classic rangefinder film cameras, but packed it with modern technology. By sharing the same internal mechanics, sensor and optical path as the earlier Olympus E-330, the Lumix L1 inherits the highly-regarded SuperSonic Wave Filter (SSWF) and a Live View feature which allows you to compose with the main colour screen just like a consumer camera.

This is not a lightweight piece of equipment. Granted, you can dismount the lens when traveling or storage to make space, but if you prefer a featherweight this is not your camera. If you like a hefty grip and placement of knobs and buttons, then it’s a winner. The camera can sit around for a week and still have a full charge.
