Good audio quality for its size
1 out of 1 users found this review usefulCompared to iM5, which sounds slightly better, the iM11 ends up being the more recommendable of the two when you factor in the price differential. While there are certainly no frills here, the Altec Lansing inMotion iM11 makes for a nice low-end fold-up dockable speaker system, and pushes the inMotion product line into new pricing territory.

A good choice for compact, reasonably priced speaker
1 out of 1 users found this review usefulWhen I got my new iPod I shopped around for a good speaker system & docking cradle. I ended up choosing Altec Lansing's inMotion IM11. Although the sound isn't as impressive as the iPod HiFi and other high end systems, it's pretty good for general indoor use. If you want a compact, reasonably priced speaker and don't need earth-shaking bass, the inMotion is a good choice.

Good but not great
I'd give this 3.5 out of 5. The main thing speakers do is produce sound. Given that these are small portable speakers, the sound clarity is good, plenty of mids and highs, but unsurprisingly, it lacks any real low frequencies which spoils the mix in my opinion. The actual maximum volume is a little disappointing, and the speakers distort at this level. My other gripe is the cheap looking power button and volume slider. On the plus side though, the thing looks pretty slick, holds all types of ipods (with little plastic inserts), supports a wide variety of international power plugs, and has good battery life. All in all, I would perhaps look at saving up and getting the IM3 for that improvement in sound - I am starting to wish I had.

Not recommended
It's yet another portable iPod speaker system, this time from well known manufacturer Altec Lansing. Sadly, we don't think the iM11 is up to scratch compared with previous units - its sound quality isn't the best.

An ok product
In sum, Altec now provides you with a choice: its dockless iM4 is physically longer and taller, and occupies more space when unfolded, but sounds better; not enough better for younger users and most average listeners to care, but better nonetheless. iM11 is narrower and shorter, includes a dock, better carrying case, and USB cable, and sounds a little less impressive. Since we tend to prefer audio quality to iM11’s advantages, we’d lean towards iM4 (or spend more money to get a better-sounding and -equipped system, like Logitech’s mm50, but price-conscious readers will find this package difficult to beat for the dollar.

A decent addition to inMotion line
Overall, the iM11's sound quality corresponds to its place at the bottom of the iM line. Although it provides good detail, its small enclosure and single-driver speakers aren't capable of producing much bass, even compared to the just slightly thicker iM5. (And, unfortunately, the iM11 doesn't include a subwoofer output, so you can't use Altec Lansing's new BB2001 to add bass when listening at home.) Similarly, the iM11 can't play as loud as the iM5 or other iM models without distorting. In fact, overall, I prefer the iM11 to the "better" iM5; the iM11's sound quality isn't quite as good, and it's missing a couple useful output jacks, but its design feels more solid and at $50 less expensive, it's a better value. For those looking for a compact speaker system under $100, the iM11 is worth considering.

Projects clear sound at low price
Altec Lansing's excellent go-anywhere iM11 folds up into a sturdy, portable 8.5 x 4.3 x 1.4-inch package that can slip into a briefcase or backpack. The back of the unit sports a power jack, audio output port, and standard USB 2.0 port for synching your iPod without removing it from the fold-out dock. Overall, this speaker delivers excellent value whether you're looking to pump up the volume in your cube or wake up to your favorite tunes at a hotel.
