Good or bad, this marks the beginning of the microDrive convergence into PDAs and cellphones. Yes, South Korea, China, and Japan have had microDrive PDAs for awhile now, but this is the US debut of real storage, and a definitive shift away from HotSync to a more-generic external drive model.

Pros: Gigs of storage, WiFi & Bluetooth, display, design, excellent software bundle
Cons: Lag time, OS instability ( & lt patch2.0), no cradle included, microdrive and battery not interchangable, bulky
It has been 3 years that I resisted temptation to get a new PDA, mainly because my So

The LifeDrive attempts to be both a PDA and a generic iPod. Although it is a capable device in both of these areas, it doesn't shine in either... check out this page for a very helpful feedback and analysis of this PDA.

This page has an excellent editor review on Palm LifeDrive... well! I must add on here that I was really hoping to have a good experience with the LifeDrive. It appeared to be a viable PDA with most of the bells and whistles and more... though it is a capable multimedia device, but it also requires special software on the PC to get the synchronization wanted and it has some quirks, like the phono jack being installed on the bottom of the unit.

Bottom Line: I recommend this if you are a Palm lover, and if you know how to tinker with computers. Otherwise, stick with the new Palm TX which is more user friendly... check out this page for some honest consumer reviews & feedback.

Here is a very helpful review and feature description for PalmOne LifeDrive... I think this palm has an astounding display! It literally feels as though you have a small computer in your hand as other reviewers have mentioned. Quality all the way here. Large enough to be easily readable, and a brightness level adjustment that gets quite bright... Despite the many great features of their products, it seems they just can't get everything right at once.

The LifeDrive is the first member of Palm's new Mobile Manager handheld category, aimed at those who want "Digital everything": Photos, MP3s, videos, lots and lots of documents and the usual PIM applications to keep track of appointments, contacts and tasks. The desktop software, LifeDrive Manager, is your one stop spot for managing files on the LifeDrive. It handles file conversion for you, can keep documents in several folders on your PC in sync and can even act as a repository for digital camera images if your camera uses SD cards.

The good: Integrated 4GB hard drive; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; doubles as USB drive; plays MP3s with support for playlists; lets you create slide shows with music; sharp screen. The bottom line: There isn't too much the PalmOne LifeDrive can't do with its integrated hard drive, its wireless connectivity, and its multimedia capabilities, but it's way too expensive.

The biggest feature of the Lifedrive, the 4 GB internal hard drive, is a mixed blessing. I love the huge storage capability, which offers a lot of different options. But the performance hit in both speed and battery life is disappointing. Still, if you want major storage, this is the only way to go on Palm OS. A unique high-end model with a lot of features, some trade-offs, and a big price tag.

The main focus on the front of the LifeDrive is the display. The way the case is constructed, it even frames the screen like a picture frame. While the display is crisp and easy to read, on full brightness, the display is noticeably dimmer than my Treo 650 when on full bright. The sound quality through the earphone jack (BTW: palmOne didn't include earbuds with this device... at least there weren't any in the eval box I received. Not that I ever use the freebies that come with PDAs...) is very good. Max volume will make your ears bleed. Sound quality through the built in speaker is fine as long as you don't turn it all the way up to max.

Nearly-endless storage makes this a great device for toting and viewing lots of files.

This new class of device is the first PDA released domestically to include a built in hard drive. It's aim is to be a repository for your digital content, be that photos, movies, music or large volumes of office documents. The LifeDrive takes the traditional PDA look with a modern minimalist look. It feels great to hold in hand. Even though it is palmOne's thickest model, the back is well beveled inwards for a nice comfortable hold. The front and back are a metallic brushed silver aluminum with a plastic middle section and bottom. The front buttons are a smooth rectangle around the racetrack shapped 5-way navigator.
