Yea, with this camera you have to earn them! Hi all. SinMin here with what is probably the one review that most of my friends here at amazon have been waiting for, The Samsung Digimax Pro 815. Before we start let me say this first off if you are easily frustrated and/or do not have at least a basic working knowledge of photography DO NOT buy this camera. When Samsung said "Pro" They definitely meant it! I'll get into why later. Samsung? Panasonic? What the heck is up with these blender compainies putting out these monster cameras!I have to say that had panasonic not realeased the FZ-30 this would have been a strong contender for the mega-zoom catagory. So do I place this number 2 to the Z-30? No- more like 3 o r 4 but definitelty in t he top 5 or 6. This first reason being is that this camera has no image stabilizer, wich is suicide in terms of good low light and ambient light photography. Samsung's trick of speeding up the shutter and boosting the ISO works at best occasionally and when it does the images are in dire need of retouching work! Bottom line the method the camera uses to restrict movement called "High Speed Shutter Mode" Does not work. But, remember that thing you hang your baseball hat on, in your closet? That Uh...Tripod! Well if you use that with the 815 in low and ambient light, and the camera works rather nicely! You may also want to fine tune your shots depending on the effect you want using the camera's shutter and apature settings. If you use the camera like we used to before they invented image stabilization you'll be just fine. Makes you wonder if Samsung knew that all along! So you say what the heck!

The Samsung Pro815 sports some very impressive specifications and some unique design features, such as the top mounted LCD screen, which are truly useful. The camera does have limitations though, the focusing at the long end of the zoom is slow and image noise at high ISO settings is fairly intrusive. On the other hand it's capable of producing very high quality, detailed images. If an all-in-one solution is what you need, and you are aware of the limitations involved then this camera could be a very good choice.

The bottom line: If you don't fancy changing lenses very often and can compromise on the oddly positioned electronic viewfinder, Samsung's Digimax Pro 815 with its 15x optical zoom should satisfy most enthusiasts and dSLR users looking for a spare camera.

The Samsung Pro815 is a remarkable camera for a number of reasons. First, its huge 15x zoom Schneider-Kreuznach lens is the most powerful on any non-SLR digital camera. Secondly, it also has the biggest monitor on any digital camera, with a massive 3.5in screen. Thirdly, it has the largest battery of any digital camera, with 1900mAh of charge capacity. And most remarkably of all, it's a Samsung.

The Pro815, offers unrivalled features and performance and is beyond comparison to other cameras in the same class. This camera is equipped with a 15X optical zoom with a focal length of 28-420mm, this means you can shoot from wide angle to telephoto with one lens... It includes high-speed continuous shooting at 2.5 frames/sec, normal continuous shooting that lets you shoot while viewing an image taken on the LCD, and ultra high speed continuous shooting that allows you to shoot up to ten 1Megapixel-sized images per second... this page has a nice detailed review on this fantastic camera.

The good: 15X optical zoom lens; 3.5-inch LCD; top mounted color LCD; raw and TIFF capture. The bottom line: Samsung's Digimax Pro 815 has impressive features, but heavy noise and slow performance outweigh its advantages.

Samsung has put the Pro815's viewfinder at the left edge of the camera, where it better fits the contours of your face. Compared to an optical viewfinder, the electronic viewfinder--which lets you see your subject through the lens--suffers from TV-like quality. Nevertheless, I found it useful when dealing with extreme lighting conditions and when tracking moving subjects.

Samsung seems to have a hit-or-miss approach when it comes to the Pro815, which is why this superzoom and enthusiast camera didn't score higher.

The Pro815 is a good first attempt by Samsung, but it is missing a few things that would allow it to compete with the big guns. The most practical feature is the 15X zoom, and if that is important to you then this may be a consideration.

This is a truely lovely piece of equipment. The 28mm wide angle lens is distortion free, from edge to egde of the frame. A great manual zoom gives complete control, and what a long zoom range! The large lens and battery make the camera quite heavy. The built in flash is pretty powerful, and in the auto setting, daylight and flash pictures have a good auto white balance adjustment. A fantastic rear LCD screen, 3.5 inches (almost 9 centimeters), is fully adjustable for brightness and shows a good image, even in dark conditions. A large battery gives longer than expected use before needing a charge. The bonus of a small top LCD is a brilliant addition. Packed with features, I give full marks to Samsung on this camera. However I could not source accessories such as the external flash as yet.
