CAPOEIRA ANGOLA 2 was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album. Capoeira's intriguing tradition is alive and well on this second album by Grupo de Capoeira Angola Pelourinho (their first was the critically acclaimed ANGOLA). This music was written to accompany the movements of capoeira, a mix of martial arts and acrobatic dance from Brazil and Africa. The music, chosen by capoeira musicians, reflects the action of the dance and often symbolically represents greater spiritual and philosophical life challenges. These traditional songs are marked by the metallic twang of the berimbau (a one-string bow played with a stick), the repetitive beats of the atabaque (standing drum), and the sounds of the pandeiro (which is generally played by four beats and a shake).
