A psychotic seizure of a performance by Christian Bale dominates "Harsh Times," the directorial debut of David Ayer that channels "Taxi Driver" while also feeling like a dry run for Ayer's subsequently written "Training Day." Bale's showy turn as a 'round-the-bend Gulf War vet and the pic's sensationalistic treatment of modern ills will likely induce a disturb and some viewers to bite. But the relish with which the film pursues its deterministic negativity will turn off most audiences.

Frank Henenlotter is a different kind of genre director. He definitely gyrates to his own unique rhythm, instilling a sense of fun-loving absurdity into what would otherwise pass for watered-down psychodramas featuring a bevy of pathetic individuals not unlike myself. The first Henenlotter flick ...

Ah, the vagaries of the human heart. When I talk about love and what it means, I get all kinds of responses. Many women cut loose with Oprah-speak, Dr. Phil-speak, and Dr. Laura-speak, or whatever pop psychology that is currently being turned out into the world. I talk to men about it, and most of ...

Hugh Jackman plays a medical researcher trying to stop a brain tumor from killing his wife (the lovely Rachel Weisz). But wait. Jackman is also playing a sixteenth-century Spanish explorer on assignment from Queen Isabel (Weisz again) to find the healing Tree of Life. And that's him, hairless, as a twenty-sixth-century astronaut. In telling a tale of love across time, Aronofsky is sometimes guilty of creating arty, pretentious psychobabble. But in visual terms, he's trying to expose his own raw, romantic heart. Folly? Maybe. But a risk worth taking.

Gillian Flynn’s debut novel, Sharp Objects, had me squirming right up to the last page. A probing examination of the psychological backlash resulting from mothering gone wrong; the pages were turning so fast, it’s a wonder I didn’t end up with life-threatening paper cuts. ...

When you’re looking for that perfect Halloween movie, consider more psychological shock than senseless schlock for scares, like the quintessential classics -- Psycho, (skip the 1998 shot-for-shot remake), The Shining, and the sci-fi classic Alien, where "no one can hear you scream in ...
