Pursuit of Happyness
Will Smith is a father struggling to take care of his young son in this touching tale based on a true story. In San Francisco circa 1981, Chris Gardner's (Smith) luck has run out. A bad business investment, a bevy of parking tickets, and back taxes in addition to rent, childcare, and groceries keep him constantly scrambling for cash. Chris thinks his luck is changing when he is accepted into a highly competitive internship program at a brokerage firm. But the internship is unpaid and soon, despite his best efforts, Chris and his five-year old son, Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith--Will Smith's real life son), find themselves homeless. Chris might spend his days training to invest and make millions, but he and Christopher spend their nights in shelters and public transportation stations. < br > < br > Gardner's story is a testament not only to the love between a father and son, but also to the strength of the human spirit. Will Smith turns in a fine, nuanced performance as a man determined to protec...

This film is emotional and thought provoking on many levels. It's the human struggle displayed in 117 minutes of screen time. You will look at your own life and wonder if you have in you what Chris did. It will make you pick up those dusty dreams you shelved away at the back of your brain and encourage you to give them another shot. Many of those dreams may not be as grandiose as Gardner's but the size of the dream is not important. It's the size of the will. Rated PG-13 for some language, it is an inspirational story for the whole family and while those under 13 may be lost in the drama everyone else will find something grand to take from the film. I give The Pursuit of Happyness 4 out of 5 shots.

The film follows the life of Chris Gardner for 7-9 months as he struggles as an office-to-office salesman and (eventually) single father to becoming a stockbroker. The heartiest parts of the story are seeing Gardner's unyielding, yet difficult commitment to staying with his son and being a good parent despite potentially crushing circumstances. I expected the film to tap into my weepy, emotional side much more than it did.

Even if you are one of the 19 other people in a competitive internship at Dean Witter with Chris Gardner (Will Smith), you gotta root for the guy. Life's beaten him up but not got him down. He lugs his computer-monitor-sized bone density scanner all over San Francisco, hoping to sell just one to make ends meet for his family—but nobody's buying. As his wife's (Thandie Newton) discontentment nears a boiling point, Chris accepts an internship at financial institution Dean Witter—six months without pay and only one of the 20 applicants will ultimately get a job out of it. This sends her packing. She leaves Chris and their son, Christopher (Jaden Smith), to fend for themselves, at which point they get evicted... check out this page for further details and review on this fantastic movie.

The Italian filmmaker appears to have a lot of potential even in Hollywood if he continues to find projects (and more importantly, stars) that nurture his vision rather than trampling it; but then again, one supposes that's exactly what The Pursuit of Happyness is all about - setting goals and accomplishing them, proper spelling be damned.

The Pursuit of Happyness is a feel-good film of the holiday season! Which takes ordinary old happiness and makes it even better and more feel-good by throwing in that friendly "y." And it does that by offering for your consideration the heart-rending spectacle of a hard-working single dad in the economically ravaged early 1980s and putting him on line at a shelter for the homeless with his absolutely adorable five-year-old tyke in tow. Or by asking you to consider how dad and son, on an even more desperate night, lock themselves in a subway-station bathroom and spread paper towels on the floor to sleep upon.

Will Smith's latest movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, stands as an extended argument underscoring the truth of conservative values. This may sound like an improbable anomaly given the traditional political, ethical, and social allegiances of Hollywood, but the power of the story lies in its basis ...

I hate alternative spelling. The spelling in the title was enough for me to know I had no desire to see The Pursuit of Happyness. However, since Will Smith received an Oscar Nomination for his performance, I caved in to my better judgment. Let’s just say that, as a filmmaker, I have already ...

Your first question is probably, “Why is ‘happyness’ spelled with a ‘y?’” No worries; the answer arrives within minutes of the opening. Your second question is most likely, “How good is Will Smith’s performance?” No fear; the ...

The Pursuit of Happyness is just that, and you will have to ask yourself if that 116-minute pursuit is worth the happiness gleaned. Reluctantly, I say no.This is an enthralling film with a fine performance by Will Smith as a man facing one roadblock after another while attempting to not only ...

I have read the book. Now I have seen the movie. This movie was inspired by the book Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner. The book chronicled Chris Gardner's life of poverty and his rise to wealthy stockbroker and entrepreneur. But the real story was that he overcame that extreme poverty ...
