Olympus hits a home run!
After leading the way in digital point-and-shoots in the early part of the decade, Olympus had fallen on hard times. Not that their cameras weren't any good, it's just that they weren't anything special. With the SP-550uz (and a few other cameras), Olympus has really stepped it up.

Camera Test: Olympus SP-550UZ - - PopPhoto
0 out of 1 users found this review usefulIn many ways, the Olympus SP-550UZ represents both the best and the worst of digital camera marketing. On the one hand, it's is a solidly built EVF, with an astonishing 18X optical zoom (4.68-84.24mm f/2.8-4.5, or a 28-504mm equivalent in 35mm), effective sensor-shift image stabilization, a 7.1 Megapixel CCD, a RAW shooting mode, and lots of other impressive features. On the other hand, it also has a number of super-impressive sounding features that come with footnotes and annotations, squirrelly explanations and marketing doublespeak.

Ratings and Reviews - SP-550 UZ Black Digital Camera
1 out of 1 users found this review usefulhe camera has a super zoom and amazing macro functions! And I love all the manual setting choices. It almost has too many! You can also program the IS button to do other functions, which is nice. The Bright Capture lcd has pros and cons. It is great in low light. In fact, the camera takes excellent low light pictures! But in bright sunlight it causes a pink sheen to cast on the lcd screen. This does not affect the picture itself, but makes exposure difficult. Overall, a great camera with many functions and worth the price.

Olympus SP-550UZ First Impressions Review
1 out of 1 users found this review usefulOlympus updated its ultra-zoom line with a new flagship, the Olympus SP-550UZ. This digital camera comes with the most zoom available on any compact digital camera to date, providing a massive 18x of optical zooming power. The camera also comes with image stabilization, which is a necessity when dealing with a 28-504mm (equivalent) focal range. However, the 7.1-megapixel SP-550 can still fit in the palm of a hand. It has total manual control, a variety of scene modes, and one of the best-looking housings created by Olympus.

Olympus SP-550 UZ Review by LAPTOP Magazine
1 out of 1 users found this review usefulIf you're looking for a camera that lets you tweak each and every setting but aren't ready to start toting around separate lenses, check out the Olympus SP-550 UZ. Its rubberized, gun-metal-gray body looks like a scaled-down DSLR with a large lens and a hand grip. Features include seven-megapixel resolution, an impressive 18X optical zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD.
