If you're looking for desktop-PC-caliber gaming performance and multimedia ability in a laptop-sized package, the m9700 is a solid choice. However, we would wait for the dual-core processor and a high-definition DVD drive option before shelling out more than four grand.

The bottom line: The Alienware Aurora m9700 packs a wallop with dual SLI graphics, two hard drives, an integrated TV tuner, and a gorgeous 17-inch wide-screen display, but we expected its performance to knock us out instead of merely leaving us weak in the knees.

Alienware takes the crown for packing SLI graphics into a 17-inch, sub ten-pound notebook; the Aurora is certainly more portable than Vigor and Voodoo's giants and more powerful and affordable than the Dell XPS M1710. With SLI starting at $2,396, this should be the first choice for all but the wealthiest gamer.

The Alienware Aurora m9700 is a serious gaming notebook and is the first of its kind to utilize NVIDIA's SLI technology. It achieves this by using two GeForce 7900GS (256MB) graphics cards smartly positioned inside the casing delivering stellar results. Driven by an AMD Turion64 processor, the Aurora m9700 can also come outfitted with dual 100GB SATA 7200-RPM hard drives set up for RAID0. Finishing all this off is a 17" widescreen LCD outputting a native resolution of 1920x1200 pixels with Clearview Technology.

Ever seen something so jarring in the design of it, that you find your eyes drilling holes into it? That's how people seem to react when I take the Alienware m9700 out in public. Since it's this large, green laptop it's almost immediately noticed and rather hard to not ask about... this page has an excellent review on this fantastic laptop.

The Alienware m9700 is without a doubt an extremely capable laptop that'll crush most of the competition. Twin 512MB 7900GS SLI graphics did impress at medium resolutions, but can clam up when maxed out on today's most demanding titles. Still a good machine, but you may want to consider a more basic spec to save some cash
