Pros: Eliminate a coffee table full of remotes ... effortlessly!
Cons: I honestly can ' t think of any!
Remotes!! Don ' t even get me started. As a custom home A/V integrator of many years, CONTROL (or lack thereof) is THE fly in the ointment for many customers. For many years, clients really had a Faustian choice. They could: 1) Purchase a " simple " ...

Harmony has had a lock on great univeral remotes for several years now, but has really missed the mark with the 890. OS X support is broken, and well as the RF repeater.

The good: Logitech's first universal learning remote to incorporate both IR (infrared) and RF (radio frequency) wireless operation includes a rechargeable battery and docking station, an RF base station, a DVR-friendly button layout and backlit keys. As with other Harmony remotes, the Logitech 890 is Web-programmable and is compatible with Windows and Macintosh machines. The bottom line: While it isn't perfect, the Logitech Harmony 890 should be near the top of your list if you're in the market for a sub-$400 RF remote that can operate equipment that's hidden behind cabinets or closet doors.

The 890 is easy to program with the PC based software. I use My Harmony 890 to control 3 TVs, 3 DVD players, 2 Satellite Receivers, 1 VCR and a digital AV receiver that does video switching. I have set it up by function (ie: Watch HD TV, Watch HD DVD, Listen to CDs,Watch Bedroom TV, etc.). It does this almost flawlessly. The RF transmitter feature of the remote enables you to operate AV equipment from anywhere in the house. It will not operate other RF equipment directly so you have to option them to accept IR signals and then they work as before. Buy it, you'll love it!

I selected the Harmony 890 (over the cheaper 880) for its built-in RF-to-IR repeater capability. I use my Harmony 890 remote to control four devices in my home theater setup. My home theater components are in a stack on the side of the room, and I have a ceiling-mounted front projector. All this means that there are no devices at the front of the room where you naturally point the remote. With the RF-to-IR repeater, this doesn't matter, the Harmony can be pointed anywhere (or even in another room), and the RF repeater relays the commands to the devices... it just works. In the future, I'm hoping to get some Z-Wave radio-controlled dimmers for the overhead lights.

The Logitech Harmony 890 universal remote control did everything I needed it to do and was capable of much more. Though I have only four devices in a single room, I could have operated up to 200 different devices from any room in my house -- so if you have a complex system, think of the 890 as a survival tool. It wraps all the functionality of a basketful of home-theater remotes into one small package of almost infinite capabilities -- just like the Swiss Army Knife.

Very easy to set up and work with. The IR blaster works great. I was surprised how many remote commands convert over to this remote. The lighting on the remote is great for watching tv at night.

The 890 is rechargeable so all of you out there who have universal remotes that eat 6 AA batteries a week don’t have buy stock in Duracell. All you have to do with this thing is set it in its little cradle every night and you’re money. It also come packaged with a wireless extender that allows a consumer a little more freedom in a world of growing wireless control units.
