In 2005, large 2.5" LCD was the feature-to-get in ultra compact category. For 2006, it is the image stabilizer. Canon's PowerShot SD700 IS is its first ultra compact with an image stabilizer. Similar to Canon's DSLR cameras, SD700's image stabilizer is an optical variation implemented on the lens, commonly referred as OIS or Optical Image Stabilizer. In contrast to electronic image stabilizer found on many other cameras, OIS does not soften the image when activated. It consumes more battery power, however. Its OIS is based on Canon's latest and greatest implementation, with support for tripod and panning (mode 2). With OIS engaged, SD700 stabilizes vertical camera movements (typically caused by shaky hands), significantly reducing image blur. Image blur is also common when shooting under low light (indoor and night time) or telephoto (zooming in). Since it stabilizes vertical movement, it is mostly effective against horizontal compositions. Canon claims SD700's OIS is good for 3 stops and no, it won't reduce image blur in demanding conditions (e.g., fast moving action, rapid panning). And certainly, do not expect to capture stable image with your hand moving.

Canon’s PowerShot SD700 IS carries a lot of digital camera charm. It’s a tricolor sleek camera with curvaceous lines. The camera just looks and feels substantial. The SD700 IS powers up quickly and shoots as fast as you can press the shutter release button. It focuses easily and swiftly, even with the image stabilization engaged.

The PowerShot SD700 IS Digital ELPH camera packs some heavyweight digital photo technology into a lightweight and pocket-sized package. Canon also enhanced the ‘My Colors’ mode found in the new PowerShot line. Where previously, users could only enable ‘My Colors’ while shooting, the current iteration permits captured images to be retouched as well, without the need for special software applications or tools.

The latest Elph, the SD700 IS, takes that build quality to a new level. It's attractive without looking like a cheap bauble, with shiny accents in just the right places. Plus, it has image stabilization for sharper images. The buttons are easy to press, with the exception of the mode dial, which is a little small and recessed into the body, so you may need to use a fingernail to turn it.

The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS Digital ELPH ($499) isn't just another ultra-compact camera: it also features a 4X zoom lens (versus the 3X models usually found on such cameras) and an optical image stabilization system (which will give you sharper photos). Neither of these features were on the PowerShot SD550 which the SD700 replaces. Other changes include improved battery life, a higher resolution LCD, and (unfortunately) a weaker flash.
